Better workplaces begin with better partnerships.

Good Work Ahead exists to help mission-driven organizations build stronger workplaces and support professionals as they navigate what's next in their careers.

Whether we're partnering with a nonprofit leadership team, coaching an emerging leader, or helping an organization strengthen its people practices, our work is rooted in one belief: when people thrive, organizations thrive.

Our Approach | Practical. Collaborative. People-centered.

Every organization is different, which is why there are no one-size-fits-all solutions.

We begin by listening—taking time to understand your goals, challenges, and culture before recommending a path forward. From there, we build practical solutions that fit your organization, your team, and your capacity to sustain meaningful change.

Our role isn't simply to advise. It's to become a trusted partner who helps leaders make thoughtful decisions, navigate complexity, and build workplaces where people can do their best work.

Meet the Founder

Hi, I'm Lanell Smith.

I'm an HR executive, consultant, and trusted advisor who partners with mission-driven organizations to build stronger workplaces through thoughtful people strategies, practical HR solutions, and collaborative leadership.

For more than 15 years, I've worked alongside nonprofit organizations, education organizations, affordable housing providers, and mission-driven teams to help leaders navigate growth, strengthen workplace culture, and build HR systems that support both people and purpose.

My experience spans human resources, organizational development, compensation, talent acquisition, employee relations, leadership development, and operations. Whether serving as an internal executive or an external advisor, I've always believed that great HR is both strategic and deeply human. It creates clarity for leaders, confidence for employees, and the foundation organizations need to focus on the work that matters most.

Whether we're strengthening a nonprofit, supporting a leadership team, or helping a professional take the next step in their career, I believe there's always a path forward—and always good work ahead.
