Hi, I’m Dr. Lanell Smith Jr., SHRM-CP

I’m the Principal Consultant at Good Work Ahead. For more than 15 years, I’ve helped mission-driven organizations strengthen their teams, develop leaders, and build people practices that support the work they were created to do.

My experience spans nonprofits, education, affordable housing, and social-impact organizations, including ALCO Management, Chiefs for Change, Education Pioneers, Good Energy Collective, TNTP, EdReports, and Aspire Public Schools.

Across those organizations, I’ve learned something simple: strong workplaces begin with people who are supported, leaders who are equipped, and systems that make good work possible.

That belief shapes how I serve clients today. I listen first, ask thoughtful questions, and help leaders turn complicated people challenges into practical next steps.

Because good consulting should do more than produce recommendations. It should create clarity, build confidence, and leave people and organizations stronger than they were before.

My Approach

I believe the best HR is both strategic and deeply human.

Too often, organizations think of human resources only when a problem arises. But when people strategy is aligned with organizational goals, HR becomes much more than compliance—it becomes a driver of culture, leadership, engagement, and long-term success.

That's why I approach every partnership with curiosity, collaboration, and practicality. Rather than offering one-size-fits-all recommendations, I work alongside leaders to understand their unique mission, culture, and goals before developing solutions that fit their organization.

Whether I'm supporting an executive team through organizational change, helping redesign compensation programs, coaching a new leader, or updating workplace policies, my goal is always the same:

To leave organizations stronger than I found them.
